You do not have to abandon your old inbox to start using a new one. Import brings the history across; forwarding keeps the new mail flowing while you switch over.
The order that works
- Start the import (it runs in the background)
- Turn on forwarding from the old account
- Update your most important logins to the new address
- Set an auto-reply on the old inbox once it is quiet
Give it a week of overlap. There is no prize for burning the bridge on day one.
